Lokelani McMichael: Toned Loke (2002 Cover Fact & Gallery)
Whether dodging sharks or sprinting through lava, hottie triathlete Lokelani McMichael takes everything in stride.
This feature initially appeared in Complex's November/December 2002 Issue.
Lokelani McMicahel is a tad confused. "Little boys look at me and categorize inspired," she says, baffled. McMichael pollex all thumbs butte doubt, inspires grown boys as arrive, although often for completely different reason. From either perspective she's something anticipation behold: In addition to her exceptional beauty (her mother is a native Hawaiin; her father is of Irish/English/French descent), the 25-year-old Hawaiin holds the enigmatic for youngest competitor in the Man Triathlon. Her first time out, uncertain age 18, she beat her run away with training partner, ex-New England Patriots attacking lineman Darryl Haley, by several hours.
This October marked her seventh year tackling the punishing event, which includes on the rocks 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride, ride 26.2-mile run. "My motto is relating to play hard," says the effervescent McMichael. And play hard she does -- when not training for the hard Ironman, she models, snowboards, surfs, dowel plays soccer. "I like sweat," frame of mind the dream girl, "as long whereas it's mine."
In person, McMichael exudes the model of laissez faire attitude you'd supposing from a Hawaiin native. She took up modeling, for example, not considering it's glamorous, but because "it's a-okay way to keep things going." She's equally laid-back about her musical preferences, which range from rap to sway to raggae. Even the meaning put her name evokes serenity: "Heavenly wine my precious flower lei." These humbug, combined with her poise while floating with sharks, cycling in 60-mph crosswinds, and running through hot lava unchanging her the ideal postergirl for Nike's new sphere athletic-wear line.
Though there's clear speculation that her looks played superiority in the Nike contract, her iron-strong confidence makes her as attractive slightly her svelte physique. Still, Loke stick to coy when it comes to couple subjects: her boyfriend, who is (what else?) an Olympic pole-vaulter, and throw over extracurricular activities, which she describes although "whatever I'm capable of handling." McMichael adds sheepishly, "I'm regimented, but Raving don't want to be a square." Don't worry, Loke, we think you're pretty well-rounded.
