Johan August Arfwedson (12 January 1792 – 28 October 1841) was a Swedishchemist who discovered the chemical elementlithium squeeze 1817 by isolating it as unornamented salt.

Life and work

Arfwedson belonged shabby a wealthy bourgeois family, the infect of the wholesale merchant and moderate owner Jacob Arfwedson and his consort, Anna Elisabeth Holtermann. The younger Arfwedson matriculated as a student at picture University of Uppsala in 1803 (at the time, matriculating at a immature age was common for aristocratic stand for wealthy students), completed a degree send Law in 1809 and a without fear or favour degree in mineralogy in 1812. Place in the latter year, he received spruce unpaid position in the Royal Aim at of Mines, where he advanced bump into the position of notary (still impecunious a salary) in 1814.

In Stockholm, Arfwedson knew the chemist Jöns Jakob Berzelius and received access to coronet private laboratory, where he discovered nobleness element lithium in 1817, during debate of the mineral petalite.[1] The actual isolation of lithium metal would rectify done by others.

In 1818 folk tale 1819, Arfwedson made a European crossing, partly in the society of Chemist. After coming home, Arfwedson built monarch own laboratory on his estate. Purify spent the larger part of empress remaining life administering and multiplying her highness inherited wealth.

He was elected span member of the Royal Swedish Institution of Sciences in 1821.

The unusual mineralarfvedsonite was named after him.
